Eng blog #1

For my research paper I have chosen to follow up on childhood obesity, particularly around elementary school children. For my paper my inquiry question would be: should physical education be taken out of schools completely?. I’ve settled on this question because the diversity of it and the many different reasons behind why people would answer yes or no. Personally, I don’t think it should. It interests me because the thoughts about physical activity and children seem to contradict themselves. For instance, we are constantly reminded everyday of how important physical activity and play is important for children. These reasons may be physical, mental, emotional, or biological. So, for the one of the things that we are reminded about when it comes to children be taken out of one the places they spend the most time at just brings questioning as well as, interest. My topic is timely because it’s still a concern in society and schools today and affects the future of children now and the children to come. I expect to find a lot of things that are hidden about the topic. These things may include the secrets behind what’s in the food to cause the problem and some of the hidden reasons to take such an important and fun part of school and children’s lives out of their school day. Things that push me more in the direction that I’m going to find out such things are the book and article titles that some of my sources have and the information that I have found in the readings, and there is still more to find out. Currently, I have not personally come across any scholars whose opinions differentiate with mine because I haven’t yet indulged in conversation with others about the topic. However, I’ve heard in the news or in other anonymous conversation thoughts and opinions that differentiate with mine. I have to further follow up on those thoughts and opinions on a personal basis. I know how I feel about the subject as of right now, however, I do know that through time and more research my thought may be subject to change, but I don’t think they will due to my personal experiences with physical education and activity in schools and how essential it was to me. I would like to get to the bottom or as close as I can to the cause of the issue of what sparked change in something that is basically traditional in the school system and a disease that’s sweeping the nation rapidly.

  1. It's an interesting topic, Ty'Kei. It's amazing that politicians and school districts continue to cut physical education. I think part of your time should be spent researching how school districts justify it.
